2023 Week 2

What Up Fellers!

Hope everyone had a great weekend and you were able to sneak out and get a round in, weather permitting!

Some important information below, please read the entire email, I know it’s a lot, but we are still working on getting this league into a lean, mean, degenerate gambling, golfing when we should be working/rearing children Machine!

As always, if you ahve any questions, please reach out to myseld and Gabe, if it is a money question, please loop Stetson in on the emails!

Lots of updates this week. Here’s a quick summary followed by more details for those who want to know.

  1. Week 3 at Ironwood, play the black tees. Note this is on the dashboard schedule, which you should bookmark.
  2. Remember, you have this week to play St. Denis, too, if you want.
  3. Net scores from Week 1 and Week 2 have been corrected to accurately account for handicap adjustments ending in a decimal.
  4. Revised Week 1 results are available on the Weekly Summary dashboard and summarized below.
  5. Money Game results from Week 1 have been revised to include all players who paid.
  6. We hired a Treasurer, league vet Stetson N, to handle the games going forward.
  7. Money game frequency (WEEKLY!), deadlines and payment directions have been revised. These changes are explained below and in the “Rules” document in the Google Drive for future reference.
  8. Handicaps have been updated for Week 2 and by mid-week should be updated for Week 3. The method is explained below and in the “Rules” document in the Google Drive for future reference.

CORRECTED NET SCORES: Net scores for Week 1 and Week 2 have been revised. Our dashboard was calculating net scores without rounding handicap adjustments. James S discovered this. (Many thanks, James!) This has been fixed.

The fix not only impacted handicaps ending in a decimal but also those ending in a whole number, because the league uses Course Adjusted Handicaps, which account for each course’s rating and slope.

For Week 1, the fix impacted multiple people in the top 10 so there were a number of players affected.

The guy running the calculations (CDAO Gabriel B) slipped from a tie for 6th to a tie for 7th place, which earns him 5 fewer cup points. Hopefully that allays any concerns that these changes are being made to game the system. They’re not. The goal is for the system to accurately calculate handicap-adjusted scores.

CORRECTED MONEY GAME RESULTS: When results were initially reported for Week 1, a few players who paid for the money games had not been marked as having paid. This has been fixed. To reduce the chances of future issues,

1.    We improved our method for documenting payments,

2.    Our dashboards now include “The List” so each player can confirm whether his payment was recorded (names only appear on “The List” for weeks for which players have paid),

3.    We hired a Treasurer.

NEW TREASURER: We’re excited to announce that the league now has a Treasurer to handle the money games. After an extensive search and exhaustive interviews, the position has been awarded to league veteran Stetson N. Thank you / congratulations Stetson!

MONEY GAME FREQUENCY: Since we now have a dedicated Treasurer and thanks to CDAO Gabriel B’s improvement of our dashboards, money games will run WEEKLY rather than monthly! Weekly games level the playing field between guys who play each week and those who play only a few times a month. Plus, when isn’t more action better?

WAGER CHANGE: With the change in frequency of games, the standard wagers will change from the original amounts of $20 for putts and pins, plus $5 for optional scratch skins to weekly amounts of $10 for putts and pins, plus $2.50 for scratch skins.

GUIDELINES & DEADLINES: To help Stetson distinguish league money from his personal transactions and to ensure the money games are as fair as possible, we’re tightening up the procedure. This information will also be added to the “Rules” document in the Google Drive for future reference.

  1. Getting into the money games
  2. VENMO ACCOUNT: Stetson’s Venmo is @StetsonNance. You can verify it’s the correct Stetson Nance by confirming the last 4 of his phone number are 7699.
  3. AMOUNT: These amounts should be included in the same Venmo transaction
  4. Putts & Pins: $10
  5. Scratch Skins: $2.50
  6. TRANSACTION NOTE: In the transaction note, please include
  7. Line 1: Cleveland Cup
  8. Line 2: Your full name or at least first name and last initial (so Stetson doesn’t have to guess which Cory or which Anthony the payment is from.)
  9. Line 3: Course Name
  1. DEADLINE:
  2. For Week 3, wagers will be accepted BEFORE a player’s round through the morning of Saturday, May 6. This allowance is against our better judgment, but we want to let players get into the action.
  3. For Week 4 and Beyond: Wagers are due for the week by midnight on the Monday of the week of play. For example, for Week 4 with play running from May 8-14, wagers are due by midnight Monday, May 8, or sooner (before your round) if you plan to play on a Monday.

WEEK 1 RESULTS^ REVISED: Play has concluded at the season’s longest event, Shawnee Hills. In week 1, 28 players reported scores. Neil (hcp: 22) posted the lowest net score among the field of 28. His 87 adjusts to a 65, six under par. Vince (hcp: 19) fired an 85, net five under for second place. Neil and Vince also tied for the week’s most greens in regulation. News flash: the game’s a lot easier when your first putt is for birdie?

Anthony L (hcp: 17), Michael F (hcp: 12) and Phil C (hcp: 20) tied for third at four under with a gross 84 and 87, respectively.

Michael F (hcp: 12) posted the lowest round with a 79, helped along by his league-leading 27 putts.

In the money (only includes players who paid; daily updates on “The List”)

  • Fewest Putts ($75):
    • Michael F with 27 putts.
  • Pins ($25 each)
    • #2 Phil C at 17”
    • #5 Cory K at 114”
    • #15 Ryan H at 216”
  • Skins ($12.50 each)
    • #12 Sam with a 4 for par,
    • #17 Tyler D with a 4 for par,
    • #18 Gabriel B with a 3 for birdie.
    • NOTE: What had been reported as Michael F’s skins on both #4 and #8 were counterfeited by Vince.

Neil’s win fetched him 300 cup points. Vince takes 165. Anthony L, Michael F and Phil C racked up 105. However, everyone who played banks at least some points toward the season-long Cleveland Cup. To see how you fared, check out the “Cup Points” dashboard.

Notably absent from the event was 2021 champion Derek, who arguably should also have been the 2022 champion. But Derek’s recovering from childbirth, an affliction that has already led one player to drop for the season. The weather isn’t cooperating for Derek to play St. Denis, although his game looked strong Saturday in adverse conditions at his home course, Manakiki. Neil and Vince and others, however, better not get too comfortable, because these first two weeks are only additional events, and a competitor like Derek is apt to battle back as the season progresses.

Want to see how you rate? Check out the leaderboard.

^NOTE: Scores are subject to change if errors are found.

HANDICAP ADJUSTMENTS: Player handicaps have been adjusted for Week 2 and will be adjusted as often as possible throughout the season to promote a level playing field. The method used for calculating handicaps is covered in the “Rules” document in the Google Drive.
